Scope 1, 2 and 3

They are the three GHG Protocol categories used to classify an organisation’s emissions: Scope 1 is direct emissions, Scope 2 is purchased energy, and Scope 3 is every other emission in the value chain.

Scope 3 is usually the largest and the hardest to measure because it depends on third-party activities. It is split into 15 categories; Categories 1 (purchased goods and services) and 2 (capital goods) cover what the company buys and are where the quality of the emission factor matters most.
