Methodology
ISO 14067 what it is and what it requires.
ISO 14067 is the international standard that sets the principles, requirements and guidelines to quantify and communicate the carbon footprint of a product. The current edition is the 2018 one. It requires declaring the unit, the system boundary and the data used, so the result is transparent and verifiable.
A carbon footprint is only useful if it can be understood and reproduced. ISO 14067 is the standard that sets those rules for products: what is measured, up to where and with which data.
What is ISO 14067?
It is the international standard to quantify the carbon footprint of a product, that is, the greenhouse gas emissions and removals associated with its life cycle, expressed in kgCO2e. It builds on the life cycle assessment principles of ISO 14040 and 14044 and looks only at climate change.
What does it require?
- A declared or functional unit, so the figure refers to something specific, such as a kilo or a part.
- System boundaries: which stages are included. A footprint can cover the whole life cycle or a part, such as cradle-to-gate.
- Data quality and source, distinguishing primary and secondary data.
- Allocation rules when a process produces several products.
- Transparency: whoever reads the footprint must be able to know what was done and check it.
What is cradle-to-gate?
It is the boundary that runs from the extraction of raw materials to the product leaving the factory. It excludes use and end of life. It is the most common one when a buyer wants to know what it purchases, because it fits Scope 3 Category 1.
How does Xain apply it?
Xain applies an ISO 14067-certified methodology verified by LRQA. Each certificate declares the unit and boundaries, and states the factor of each node in the process tree. The details of the method are on the methodology page, and the meaning of the verification on the LRQA verification page.
How is it different from an EPD?
ISO 14067 measures only climate. An environmental product declaration (EPD) covers more indicators and follows category rules. We compare them in PCF versus EPD.
